The Prahran house features a rich tapestry of recycled bricks illuminated through light.
Designed for a client with a well-curated, vibrant art and book collection, House of Brick emerges from the site of an old brick mechanic’s workshop as a new three-level dwelling that highlights a rich tapestry of 1950s recycled clinker brick. Located in an urban cul-de-sac, the brick and steel abode speaks of the past while presenting a strong contemporary statement to the street and capturing the spirit of its owner.
Pivotal to the design is the layout of the kitchen, which features eucalyptus veneer timber joinery and an elongated porcelain island unit that caters for entertaining on a grand scale. On the top level, the study/home office is one of the most intimate and richly adorned spaces, where impeccably stacked books sit alongside sculptural offerings from internationally renowned artists. In stark contrast to the lower levels, broad-timber floorboards, pristine white walls, and accents of yellow add textural variation and warmth in the main bedroom.
A bespoke steel two-storey book tower cuts through the ceiling from the living space to a study above – a unique solution that houses the client’s extensive book collection
